Checks & Balances Project (C&BP) filed a complaint with the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services seeking an investigation of the Stony Creek Volunteer Rescue Squad (SCVRS) and its chairman, Sussex County Supervisor Steve White.
C&BP based its complaint on the lack of transparency involving Stony Creek’s finances and that White has voted on issues related to the rescue squad while a Sussex County supervisor.
The IRS stripped SCVRS of its nonprofit status in 2023 after it failed to file tax returns for three straight years. The last publicly available tax return was for 2019. The five years’ worth of available tax returns from 2015 through 2019 showed that SCVRS had a $304,000 surplus.
Freedom of Information Act requests
C&BP has filed a Freedom of Information Act request with Sussex County. It seeks all communications and records from 2022 to the present regarding the county emergency medical services department and the SCVRS.
That request is the second from C&BP to the county. On June 18, C&BP requested the county’s recusal policy for public officials and any record of commissioners recusing themselves from a public vote in the last 25 years.
The county has not provided information on either request by July 1.
Ray Locker is the executive director for Checks & Balances Project, an investigative watchdog blog holding government officials, lobbyists, and corporate management accountable to the public. Funding for C&BP is provided by Renew American Prosperity and individual donors.
